Just out of the blue, I started my pc and the windows logo comes on Windows 98 se , and then the password information comes on never knew how to get rid of this, so I always just hit the little x in the upper corner and it goes away , then after waiting for awhile, the screen goes blue, and an error message appears that says: "Explorer--This program has performed an illegal operation. The only choice is details, close, or hit the "x" After hitting the close program, or the x, the screen goes blue, the arrow of the cursor is visible and moves when moving the mouse, but it just stays blue and does nothing.

I was thinking of installing a new hard drive and configuring it for the primary boot drive, and then somehow trying to access the old drive to get my files off of it and move them to the new drive. Is that wishful thinking?? Or is there a Norton doctor disk that can easily take care of this problem? Seems as if I can get to uninstall the windows explorer program, the prob would go away.

But I can't do anything because the os doesn't let me past the blue screen. Is this a glitch in the Windows Explorer program? If so, shouldn't Microsoft be responsible to us for fixing this problem? What to do next??? Posted 27 December - PM. Same problem here. Started with I had to re-enter the prod registration key which I didn't have, but microsoft gave me one Did that and tries to get to my desktop and comes up with the error "explorer caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.

Close the screen with the error and you can't go any further. Need help please. Used boot log disk and win98se disk, got up to windows trying to install.

I have a funny feeling that's where my problem lies - but I don't know aht to do about it! Last edited by bras; at PM. Prince of the OC Crusaders Intel i7 3. Ugh, then what are we supposed to do if we have a problem similar to Bras'? Damn MS They can't do that can they???

Now, when I installed w98 using 98lite I copied the steup files to my hdd for easier isntalling. I always do this, but 98lite seemed to recommend it for some reason too. I think something has gone wrong with those files. That would seem like a normal thing to want to do, but for M4 it's obviously not! When he types 'Setup' form the CD-ROM prompt it says something along the lines of: the executable has to be bigger than , bytes to run!!!! Is this a conventional memory problem?

If so, why? Sorry about the poor language, but this really pisses me off! I have to direct my bro over the phone cos he knows very littl about PCs! Any ideas? This sounds silly, but is it possible the alpha characters of the key code are case sensitive? Only reason I could think of for it not accepting the key code from a DOS prompt.

I simply ran setup from the DOS prompt. Any ideas on the execuatble error it gave me see post above? This is just plain silly! Last edited by blt; at PM. I did the same thing for about 15 min one day until I realized that I need a zero instead of the letter o. Easy to do looking at the small print on the coa's.
